Gorillas Head Coach Joe Ferras said, “With Shawn Degagne signing in Elmira, we expect Jamie to be our number one goaltender and have a breakout season. Hooked on Amarillo
4 Canadians stick around after hockey careers end Texas' border with Mexico is usually a primary part of any discussion on national border security. Way up north, Canada gets left out in the cold. Amarillo, however, has benefited from immigrants from the Great White North, eh? Since the inception of the Amarillo Rattlers in 1996 and the rebirth of Amarillo professional hockey with the Gorillas in 2002-03, the city has had an annual influx of Canadians, hockey players to be specific. At least four of them - Brad Haelzle, Dave Rattray, Eric Andersen and Jamie Vandespyker - have made Amarillo home since hanging up their skates. The reason? Well, it is not Amarillo's abundant wind or exotic scenery. As the natives will tell you, people are this area's greatest resource. Three of the four former Gorillas/Rattlers married area women, and all four have planted roots in Amarillo. Here's what they're up to:
JAMIE VANDESPYKER Born: 1980, Campbellville, Ontario, Canada. With skates on: Goaltender played three seasons for the Gorillas (2003-07). Won 33 games. Played more than 1,000 minutes each season. What he's doing now: Finance manager for Gene Messer Ford of Amarillo. Married to Kirstin, a Claude native. Met his wife at a Gorillas game that she attended with her younger brother. You don't say: "In August and September, you sometimes feel like you want to play again," Vandespyker said. "I went and skated with them about a week ago at practice (after goaltender Mike Gorman suffered a dislocated shoulder). I was a little sore after, but it went better than I thought." |

Just to fill out the roster, the Gorillas picked up Jamie Vandespyker, a goaltender who played three seasons for the Gorillas (2003-07) and won 33 games. Vandespyker's wife, Kirstin, is from Claude. His day job is finance manager at Gene Messer Ford of Amarillo. Vandespyker has practiced with the team off and on this season. He did not see any action Sunday. |
