Pat Severyn rifled home three goals to card a hat trick as the Amarillo Wranglers smothered Bismarck in Southwest Hockey League action last night in the Amarillo Civic Center Coliseum.
The Wranglers' win helps the defending SWHL champions stay within two points for front-running Tucson. Tucson beat Albuquerque, 2-1, last night in overtime.
The win also pushes Amarillo two points ahead of third-place Bismarck. Tucson has 20 points, the Wranglers have 18 and Bismarck has 16.
Severyn, working in the company of Kelly Kehoe and Vern Quaroni, a line which produced four goals and as many assists last night, scored his first goal at 13:38 in the second period. Amarillo was a man short at the time.
In the final period Severyn scored at 4;06 and 11:34. Scott Williams, who also scored a goal, figured into two of Severyn's assists.
The Wranglers grabbed a 1-0 lead with 15 seconds remaining in the first period as Severyn and Kehoe got the puck to Quaroni. Bismarck tied the score 49 seconds into the second period on a Craig Miller goal.
An unassisted goal by Ron Hirschfield at 12:22 and Severyn's first (sic) goal at 13:38 gave Amarillo the win.
Woody Allan worked the goal for Amarillo last night. He kicked out 35 Bismarck shots. His counterpart Kerry Seamen stopped 44 Amarillo shots.
"We were off for 12 days and had five days without ice. We got off to a slow start, " said Wrangler coach Cal Swenson. "Bismarck has a pretty good club. But they are hurting. They have a couple of injured players.
"Pat (Severyn) had a pretty good game. The line of Severyn, Quaroni and Kehoe had eight points. That's a pretty good night."
Amarillo returns to the ice tonight hosting Bismarck beginning at 8 p.m.
